چکیده

Yersinia enterocolitica strain 8081, representing the high-pathogenic biotype 1B, harbours three flagellin genes arranged in tandem in the order fliC3, fliC, fliC2. The genes are organized monocistronic but coordinately expressed under the control of the flagellar sigma factor. No sequence data is available on flagellins of low-pathogenic Y. enterocolitica biotypes 2-5 and of biotype 1A strains, appearing non-pathogenic in the mouse infection model. We sequenced the flagellin genes of ten biotype 1A and biotype 4 isolates, respectively. While we could not identify any sequence polymorphism among flagellin genes of biotype 4 isolates, we found that biotype 1A strains harbour three variable flagellin genes. Moreover, three biotype 1A isolates exhibited a rearranged flagellin gene order and at least one rearranged flagellin gene was apparently acquired by horizontal gene transfer. The variability of flagellin genes seems to mirror evolution towards novel flagellin functions. By contrast, strictly conserved flagellins of biotype 4 isolates point at a strong selection pressure such as expected to be imposed by an important function in the context of infection.

Homologues of insecticidal toxin complex genes in Yersinia enterocolitica biotype 1A and their contribution to virulence.

Yersinia enterocolitica is an enteric pathogen that consists of six biotypes: 1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Strains of the latter five biotypes can carry a virulence plasmid, known as pYV, and several well-characterized chromosomally encoded virulence determinants. Y. enterocolitica strains of biotype 1A lack the virulence-associated markers of pYV-bearing strains and were once considered to be aviru...

Molecular Analysis of β-Lactamase Genes to Understand their Differential Expression in Strains of Yersinia enterocolitica Biotype 1A

Beta-lactams are used as major therapeutic agents against a number of infectious agents. Due to widespread use of β-lactams, β-lactamases have evolved at a rapid pace leading to treatment failures. Yersinia enterocolitica causes many gastrointestinal problems. It is an extremely heterogeneous species comprising more than fifty serotypes and six biotypes which differ in their ecological niches, ...

Occurrence of Virulence Genes and Biofilm Formation in Yersinia Enterocolitica Isolated from Pigs

Sixty isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica from pigs belonging to 1A and 4 biotypes, and one non-typeable isolate were investigated in order to determine the occurrence of genes directly connected with pathogenicity of Y. enterocolitica by using a multiplex PCR. The multiplex PCR assay was based on the amplification of the ail, ystA, ystB, and yadA genes in one reaction. The bacterial adhesion t...

Expression of invasin and motility are coordinately regulated in Yersinia enterocolitica.

The Yersinia enterocolitica inv gene encodes the primary invasion factor invasin, which has been previously shown to be critical in the initial stages of infection. The expression of inv is influenced by growth phase and temperature and is maximal during late exponential-early stationary phase at 23 degrees C. In addition, motility of Y. enterocolitica is regulated by temperature. Y. enterocoli...

The Yersinia enterocolitica motility master regulatory operon, flhDC, is required for flagellin production, swimming motility, and swarming motility.

The ability to move over and colonize surface substrata has been linked to the formation of biofilms and to the virulence of some bacterial pathogens. Results from this study show that the gastrointestinal pathogen Yersinia enterocolitica can migrate over and colonize surfaces by swarming motility, a form of cooperative multicellular behavior. Immunoblot analysis and electron microscopy indicat...
